I honestly can't understand why people smoke. All of my grandparents smoked (at some time or another) and they all had health complications because of it. I just think that if society keeps making it unacceptable to smoke in public, whether its on campus or in a restaurant, maybe finally we'll be rid of this awful habit! That's what I'll hope for, anyways! :)

Blog 8: Smoke-Free is the Way to Be
I absolutely believe that TWU should be a smoke-free campus. In fact, if I were "Queen of the World" as one of my professors puts it, I would make it a smoke-free UNIVERSE! I personally have never smoked or used any kind of tobacco product, so I realized that it doesn't necessarily apply to my daily life. And I can even understand how TWU smokers must feel, they technically should be allowed to smoke when and where ever they feel like it. But I just really cannot stand smoking. It is definitely one of my biggest pet peeves! I won't get on my soapbox and preach to you all the evils of smoking.. Your health and your body are your own, and you can make whatever decisions you'd like about smoking. But my biggest problem with smoking is that other people's smoking affects my health too!

I second that! Second hand smoke is just as harmful as inhaling from a cigarette. Which is truly unfair to those individuals who try to lead a healthy lifestyle and abstain from a habit such as smoking. I also understand that we are all free to make our own decisions, one of those is choosing to be a smoker or non-smoker. We do not live in a perfect world but if we do try to create better public environments we all have a better chance at living long and healthy lives.
ReplyDeleteTristan, I totally agree! We always hear smoking is bad for you, but as I was reading this week's chapter I actually stopped and looked at my husband and said "I don't understand anyone who has any education and still smokes!!" I know there are a lot of educated, smart people out there who smoke but I just do not understand! My best friend is one of them. She always says "a cigarette here and there is not any worse than a lot of other things we do". She is referring to eating bad, not exercising, etc. This kills me!! Smoking is a lot worse than eating bad and not exercising (although those are VERY important too). Addiction can be such a scary and controlling thing. It can overrule our common sense and desire to live and THAT is scary!
ReplyDeleteI think addiction really is a critical element of this whole subject. But are we as a society responsible for providing the resources to alleviate it? Where does personal responsiblity take hold? Tobacco use, while addictive, is not an infliction, it is a choice. Unlike cancer and natural disasters, it is avoidable for the participant. The problem is that the rest of us are stuck with the consequences of the participant's choice! While I am always bothered by this, I was especially unhappy about it while I was pregnant. I was amazed by those who looked directly at me and my round belly and made no attempt whatsoever to puff their poison in the other direction! TWU, while not the leader in the smoke-free college campus initiative, should still definitely get on board!
ReplyDeleteRight on! I agree with you and am also puzzled as to why people smoke. Why would anyone even begin smoking after seeing the, only negative, effects? My grandparents smoked constantly in the house, in the car with the windows rolled up, and anywhere else they were. I remember thinking I couldn't breathe due to the huge mass of smoke swirling around. I believe smoking should be banned completely, also. It is not right for someone to release deadly second hand smoke into our breathing air. I do not smoke and do not appreciate having to pay the price for someone else's ignorance and lack of care for anyone's health. Smoking is disgusting.
